I recently purchased a gently used (150 hrs)TC29 with SS and FEL. I have only put about 15 hours on it and really love the machine. One bug that I have noticed however is that when I try to change between HST ranges the lever will not always go into position. In order to get it to slip into place I goose the tractor forward or back (to move the gears?) and then try to shift again. This seems to do the trick, but should I have to use this technique? I am new to tractoring and maybe you guys just put up with it. I don't want to bug the dealer if is is "normal". Thanks.

My Ford 1710 transmission would be similar. The column shift gears are synchro-meshed but the ranges aren't. Sometimes going to a different range is a bit difficult, but I don't think I ever had to actually move the tractor. It always goes to neutral without problem. If won't go to a different range easily, I feather the clutch slightly while gently pulling the range lever. Occasionally there is a very slight grinding of gears. I emphasize 'gently, 'slight' and 'easily'. Non-synchro-mesh gears do stop unaligned, but it shouldn't take much to change the alignment. The whole thing should be able to be done by rotating the input shaft with the clutch rather than changing the output shaft by moving the tractor. You might want to check for clutch pedal free-play. There should be some at the top of the travel. Insufficient free-play could cause a clutch to drag, and that may cause shifting difficulties. You might also note whether shifting difficulties are easier in 2wd rather than 4wd. If shifting is more difficult in 4wd, or disengaging the 4wd is difficult, you might check to see if the front/rear tires are a factory matched set. The front/rear tire circumferences must be within a particular ratio or the axles will 'wind-up'.

New2blue, the short answer is, Yes, it's normal for the hydros. It should go into neutral easily enough, as TomG said. Then if it doesn't go into the range you want easily, just step on the hydro pedal very gently to turn the gears a little, let up, and try again. You might need to do it 2 or 3 times, but don't try to force it. ....

Maybe an opportunity here to reduce my ignorance. I thought SS was shuttle-shift and SS was gears rather than HST. Always happy to learn something new. Irrespective, the ideas of engaging the ranges are the same with HST and with gears, as well as 4wd and the diff lock for that matter. The previous owner of my 1710 had somehow broken the 4wd lever off the collar and welded it back on. The linkage broke in the differential case on me, which produced a sizable repair bill. Don't know how he did it (Maybe jamming it into 4wd to pull out of mires--perhaps while barking like a dog ala Tim Allen). I did that once. It's pretty fun, even if my wife did give me an amused indulgent glance. However, such things are not good for tractors. It's better to develop a feel for what the machinery wants to do and not to force it. I ended up paying the bill for a previous owner’s abuse. I probably should have noticed the welded 4wd lever before I bought the tractor, but I probably would have bought it anyway. ....

In this case, SS=SuperSteer. And my standard transmission TC29 is the same about shifting between ranges; but as I'm learning the tractor more, it is getting easier. Bill ....

Sorry, Tom G, I should have said TC29D with SuperSteer as Bill noted. Thank you gentlemen, for the comments. I have been trying to be gentle - I don't like the sound of grinding gears because it sounds like money going down the drain! I will try to feather the clutch and see how it goes. ....
